Your Laptop and Water Damage

Putting a laptop and a soft drink onto the same surface is almost taboo to most people who own a laptop computer, even though most people who are at their computers or laptops for several hours a day will tell you that it is quite difficult to put in a full day's work at the computer and not eat and drink almost at the same time.

I keep a drink near me at all times and fortunately I have never spilled anything onto my beloved laptop, but there are many incidents where others have. Those who have only just purchased their first laptop will probably not know how to deal with water (or liquid) damage like this. There is a way to handle this situation and possibly save your machine, however.

Most water damage that is done to your laptop is usually caused by acidic beverages like soda or coffee, because they leave a sticky residue on anything they are spilled on. They also tend to cause corrosion on any metal contacts that they might touch on the motherboard, hard drive, and etcetera.

If you do spill something on your laptop, remove the power source as quickly as possible. This includes the A/C adapter and the battery, as well, because it is not the liquid alone that causes the problem. If a laptop or other electronic device has no electricity running through it when the liquid is spilled, it will likely be fine if you dry it out as soon as possible.

However, an electric current running through a wet device is what causes the circuits to essentially fry and all software programming to be removed. Let a device such as a CD player that has become submerged in water dry out completely before you attempt to power it on. Remove the batteries until you are sure. This same principle can be applied to a wet laptop.

If you have merely spilled water onto it, then you might not have a big problem on your hands as long as you removed the electrical current from the device before the water sank deep into the device. If you have spilled soda or coffee into the device, then it will leave a sticky residue on the inside of your laptop.

After removing the electrical current, turn it over and allow the excess liquid to drain out. After you to this, wipe the outside with a cloth of some kind.

After this, you can take the machine to a professional repairman to make sure the inside is undamaged or if you have only spilled water into it, you can wait until it is completely dry. If you are absolutely sure that the inside components were not damaged by the electric current, turn it back on after you are sure the inside is dry.

Beware of Vaastu or Feng Shui Specially When Builders Talk About Them

While lately frontline Indian companies are making some progress in corporate governance but by and large business houses in India ranging from small to large sizes still depend heavily on misinformation, deceit and false claims than quality of products, design innovation and service to make profits. Our businesses and businessmen have a very dismal record about product innovation and customer service but probably they are the best in world when it comes to misinformation and confusing the consumers.

I used to see advertisements in newspapers and magazines from builders claiming that their homes are Vaastu compliant and I did not actually know what they mean until I recently visited many properties in Bangalore. I am having a plan to buy a small apartment and so I stared to do research and visit the model flats which fit my requirements and budget. I never care about Vaastu or Feng Shui and to be honest I am not a believer of these para sciences (if they cannot be called bad sciences) and so whether a flat is Vaastu compliant or not really doesn't matter to me.

But I was shocked to see how the builders are using this belief of Vaastu to justify their bad designs. Most of the builders are just in the game of making maximum profit from the piece of land they have got and they just don't care about natural light and breeze which is so essential from an architectural point of view. They just want to build maximum square feet so that their gains are maximized and they have just found these Vaastu and Feng Shui very convenient to ward off any uncomfortable question that a prospective buyer may ask.

And it is not only one or two builders that are using this ploy; 8 out of 10 builders I met have some way or other used the Vaastu excuse to justify their poor layout, lots of unusable cubicle spaces in their apartments and dark rooms and bathrooms. Some even went one step farther and referred their design as compliant not only with Vaastu but with Feng Shui as well. I was shocked to see and know from these learned Vaastu gurus that some apartments where 25% spaces were wasted in corridors or cubicles and some other apartments where 60% of the space don't get natural light and remain dark during day time are actually built as per the specification of the great Vaastu and Feng Shui.

I leave it to individuals whether they would believe Vaastu or Feng Shui and I have nothing against these para sciences as long are they are entertaining and do not do anything destructive or damaging. But please don't select the apartment on the basis of these claims and if we take the words of the builders at face value, believe me then I have already encountered 8 different versions of Vaastu which are totally at conflict with one another. It is like having 8 different laws that define gravitational attraction or 8 different results from adding a set of numbers.

If you want to know some basic tips about choosing a flat for a pleasant living there are few things that you must do. First, visit the apartment in the morning or in late afternoon and see whether all rooms and specially the bathrooms get natural light or not. Secondly apartments with three sides open are the best but there are not so many and so if you need to settle for the ones with two sides open the best bet is east and south followed by south and west.

You should also look for open space between apartment blocks and inside the compound as well and if there is space the rooms would get better ventilation. The size of the windows too matter and apartments with glass French windows will have more natural light and better views of the surroundings. The ventilation in bathroom is very important to keep the bathrooms dry and hygienic and most builders neglect that and try to place bathrooms in the darkest corner of the apartment.

The buyers will do better if they look for apartment blocks that are airy and lighted in the first place than Vaastu or Feng Shui compliant. An apartment with lots of natural light and fresh air will definitely keep you hale and hearty than a so called Vaastu compliant dark and gloomy home.

How To Use Electricity Safely

When safety procedures are not followed, life can be a series of painful should have's and could have's.

Such was the case for California parents who should not have let their seven-year-old and nine-year-old daughters play in a filled bathtub near a hair dryer, especially when the dryer should not have been plugged in, and the outlet should have had a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Both children died when the dryer fell into the bathtub.

According to the National Safety Council, more than 500 deaths occur in the United States each year as a result of home electrical fires and electrocutions. Here are some very important actions you should take to protect your family.

Get Your Home Up To Code

* Signs of problems include: blown fuses; tripped circuit breakers; dim or flickering lights; buzzing sounds; odors; hot switch plates; and switches or outlets that don't work. Get professional help immediately!

* The Electrical Safety Foundation International recommends an inspection by a licensed electrician every 10-40 years, and when you buy a house. Also consider an inspection when you add high-wattage appliances or renovate.

* Use a GFCI where appliances will be used near water, and in all outdoor outlets. The GFCI protects the body from shock by switching off power to a malfunctioning circuit.

* Test the GFCI monthly and after a major electrical storm. Use a plug-in device, e.g., a night light, and turn it on. Depress the "Test" button. If the light turns off, the outlet is working. If the "Reset" button pops out but the light stays on, the GFCI is not working. Press "Reset" and call a licensed electrician. You can also buy a special GFCI tester.

* Consider installing arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI). They can prevent fires due to bad wiring.

An Important TO DO List

* Buy only electrical products, preferably double-insulated, certified by a nationally recognized testing lab such as UL, CSA, ITS or Met Labs.

* As a general rule, do not plug appliances into the same outlet if the combined wattage exceeds 1500 watts. If the wattage is not on the product, multiply the amps by 125.

* No more than one heat-producing appliance (microwave, toaster, coffee maker or waffle iron) should be plugged into an outlet.

* Unplug immediately any appliance that sparks or stalls.

* To replace a blown fuse, use the same size as the original.

* If a lamp's wattage is not marked, use a 60 watt or less bulb.

* Keep electrical appliances away from water. Be sure your hands and feet are dry before you touch any plugged-in appliance.

* When you finish using small appliances or power tools, unplug them. They can electrocute if they fall into water, even if turned off.

* Despite Hollywood, never use a telephone, even a portable, in a bathtub, shower or swimming pool.

* During an electrical storm, avoid bathing, touching an appliance or using a telephone or computer.

* Don't tuck in or cover an electric blanket. It may overheat and catch fire.

* If you smell gas, do not use a phone or electrical product, including a light switch. A spark can ignite gas. Evacuate immediately, and call the gas company or fire department.

* Use one-piece "safety caps" on unused wall and extension cord outlets, particularly if kids are around.

* Call in an expert to work around power lines.

* If someone is shocked, do not touch them if they are still in contact with the electrical source. Turn off the power and seek help.

Plugs And Extension Cords

* A polarized plug has one blade wider than the other. If it doesn't fit, use an adapter. Don't try to force it.

* To avoid overloading a cord, add up the wattage of the products plugged into the cord, and compare it to the cord's wattage rating.

* Never use extension cords to replace permanent wiring. The longer a cord is used, the greater the fire hazard due to heat buildup.

* Unplug and safely store extension cords which are not in use. The unplugged end in a child's mouth can lead to death or serious injury.

* To pull a plug from an outlet, grip the plug. Don't yank the cord.

* Keep cords off steam pipes, heaters or other hot surfaces.

* Don't run cords under rugs or furniture. Untangle twisted cords. They can overheat and start a fire.

* Insert plugs fully into extension cords so the prongs are not exposed.

* Discontinue using a cord that is hot or very warm to the touch.

* Only use cords outdoors that are marked for outdoor use.

* Avoid using extension cords with high wattage appliances such as air conditioners, heaters and irons. If you must, use a heavy-duty cord.

* Check all electrical cords at least once a year. Cracked or frayed cords are a principal cause of fires. Also check appliances for cracks that could lead to overheating.

Reconditioned Dyson Vacuum: Three Questions To Consider Before Purchasing Retail

So... you've decided that a Dyson vacuum is in your future? Congratulations! I personally think you've made a wise investment in your home-cleaning arsenal. Arsenal? Gosh, I make a clean home sound kinda like warfare.

I guess after 20+ years of marriage and always having one kind of pet or another, it feels like warfare keeping the house clean at times.

Before heading out to your local retail store to plop down several hundred $1's on that brand spankin' new Dyson, consider the alternative; buying a reconditioned Dyson vacuum online. I did 3+ years ago and here's why I think you should too.

Question 1: Ask yourself "Do I have an extra $200 to $300 to burn or could I think of a better use for that money?"

Purchasing a refurbished Dyson (read below what definition)can save you several hundreds of dollars off retail. Go to your local Sears or Best Buy and I'm guessing for a DC14 Animal, you're going to pay around $550 to $600 for a new vacuum. And that doesn't include tax so add another $35 to $40.

Total: $580 - $640.

Now compare that to a Factory-Reconditioned Dyson DC14 Animal that can be purchased online and you're looking at a price, I'll bet, that's in the the $300s range! And most times purchasing online means NO TAX and FREE SHIPPING.... BaddaBing BaddaBoom, you just saved enough to have a heckuva nice romantic getaway for a night maybe two my friend. Read on.

Question 2: Ask yourself "Do I have to have a brand new Dyson?"

Here's a simply definition of a remanufactured Dyson vacuum - "factory reconditioned to new condition (a few cosmetic blemishes may exist) backed by a factory warranty".

Bottom line - for all intents and purposes, you're getting a brand new vacuum that may have a few cosmetic blemishes on it. Mine didn't and neither did two other friends who bought reconditioned units either. Dyson even puts a full 6 month warranty on all their remanufactured units to give you piece of mind.

Question 3: Ask yourself "Do I take pride in finding the best deal?"

Everytime I look at my Dyson Animal, I get a kick out of how much I saved going the reconditioned route vs. retail. You may be like-minded or you may not. But the fact is, after 3+ years of ownership, I can't, and neither can anyone else, tell 1 bit of difference between my reconditioned Dyson and a new one.

If you want all the benefits - Dyson vacuums have incredibly positive reviews and are known for their exceptional suction. Among the cool features are a 17-foot telescoping wand, permanent HEPA filters and 150,000 Gs of cyclonic force - while saving a boat load of money, I encourage your to check out a remanufactured Dyson vacuum instead of a brand new one. In a couple days, after delivery, I think you'll be glad you did.

It is available in many colors to fit most room colors.

Dirt Devil carpet extractors run under $200, most around $100 and come in a variety of sizes to tackle most carpet cleaning jobs. Including the new spot cleaner, which can be set on top of a carpet stain where it will stay in position, permanently removing the stain. Uprights, handheld units as well as larger carpet extractors can make cleaning your carpets easier.

Eureka Cordless Vacuum Praised By Owners

For those people who hate to drag an electric cord around the house when they vacuum a Eureka cordless vacuum may be a logical choice. Those who want something additional to use for quick pick-ups without dragging out their larger units, also find them extremely useful.

The NiCad rechargeable battery technology may cause some hesitation in making the switch to a cordless vacuum cleaner, but the vast majority of users who own one, have been extremely happy with their decision. Most of the Eureka cordless vacuum cleaners, especially the upright style, have settings for carpets and bare floors and users compliment the ease with which the switch is made.

Additionally, not having a cord to unwind every time it is used is viewed as a time saver when cleaning. Claims are also made that it is great to have for a small job where having to bring out the bigger corded machine can be a hassle. It’s lightweight and ease in maneuverability is also a plus.

Needing a vacuum for out of the way jobs, such as a car, a Eureka cordless hand vacuum can also be handy to have around. Being able to pick it up from the charging station and use it quickly is bonus for car owners as well as for the occasional spill of dry goods.

The only fault some find with a Eureka Cordless Vacuum, looking at the uprights, is not being able to get into some tight spots, but they also agree that very few uprights can and so they also have a small hand vacuum cleaner to vacuum there.

Claim By Cleaners Kirby Used Vacuum Still Picks Up Where Others Quit

Finding a used Kirby vacuum cleaner is not difficult on internet auction sites or from private individuals, but finding one with a warranty still valid, is hard. Kirby sells its units today the same as it did when the company first began, through home demonstration only and its warranty is limited to the original purchaser.

Originally, through in-home sales, most Kirby vacuum cleaners would cost between $1,500 and $3,000 depending on the mood of the sales staff since they had a lot of individual control over pricing and Kirby had a finance company who accepted those with less than perfect credit histories. Although their financing and sales techniques still raise a few eyebrows, there was never any doubt about the quality of the vacuum.

Finding bags, filters and belts for used Kirby vacuum cleaners is not a real issue as they are available in abundance through online auctions as well as by dialing a toll-free number listed on the company’s website. However, they are not usually sold in retail or hardware stores. The company discovered when it first began that once a potential customer witnessed the cleaning capabilities of a Kirby, they quickly became customers and preferred dealing directly with the individual.

Unlike a few other vacuum cleaner manufacturers that refurbish returned machines and offers them for re-sale, Kirby only allows it independent dealers to sell brand new equipment. Believing in offering only quality, guaranteed and durable products Kirby has managed to provide customer satisfaction with its vacuuming and rug cleaning equipment since 1906.

Choosing Interior Paint Colors

Changing the color of your interior walls is an excellent way to increase the resale value and appeal of your home. It is a cost-effective way to add style, personality, and warmth to any room. In fact, it is so cost-effective, that some choose to paint their walls quite frequently in order to change the mood of a room, paint a room according to the season, or just to express their personalities.

So what colors should you use to repaint your walls? Well, that is completely a matter of taste, but there are a few things to remember that may make it a little easier for you to choose the perfect colors for your taste.

Psychological Effects of Colors

It is important to remember that colors have a relatively strong psychological impact on us. It is common knowledge that lighter colors, such as white and yellow, tend to make a room appear brighter and larger, while darker colors can make a room seem smaller. There are also warm colors, like red, orange, and yellow which are inviting. Green, blue, and purple are some examples of cool colors, which tend to be relaxing and soothing. Light blue is commonly thought of as the most calming color, which is why you may see schools, daycares, detention centers, etc. utilizing it in their paint schemes.

Utilizing Colors

When choosing a paint color for the inside of your home, take your furniture, floors, etc. into consideration. The goal is o choose colors that compliment the colors of your furniture, appliances, floors, accessories, and other established colors within your home. The use of contrasting colors can also be utilized to your advantage. You can use colors that contrast large pieces of furniture, artwork, etc. to emphasize these objects.

Paint color can also be used to draw attention to architectural features, such as arches, trim, doorways, and any other unique aspects of your home that you may want to incorporate more fully. Furthermore, well-chosen color combinations can also cover up or hide certain design flaws or unattractive aspects of your home’s design.

Tools to Help You Choose

There are several options available to help you choose what colors you want for your walls. Every paint store supplies paint color samples. Remember that the color may not appear the same on the little card as it will on a twenty-foot wall. Normally, the samples appear slightly darker, while the color will seem brighter on a large surface. There are several computer programs that let you preview what your color combinations will look like in a model of your home.

Probably the best method of coming to a solid conclusion as to what colors you would like to use on your walls, is to ask a professional. Professional painting contractors have much useful knowledge and experience including, not only color choices, but what type of paint is best, type of application, and other information useful to your unique situation. What better source of advice?

Kirby Vacuum Cleaner Review

Whenever a user writes a Kirby vacuum cleaner review, they have nothing but great things to say about the quality, durability and how great it picks up on all surfaces, regardless of how long they have owned one.

Although many reviews have expressed a less than satisfactory view of the selling techniques of the independent sales agents, the quality of the vacuum cleaner and its ability to perform has never been anything but fantastic.

From the first units designed and engineered by Jim Kirby in 1906 through today, Kirby has listened to the people who use the vacuum cleaners and the feedback from the independent sales force to make the units more useful. There is no other vacuum cleaner on the market with the attachments to help clean every part of a person’s home than Kirby.

The suitcase-like container that holds all the attachments are a mainstay for homeowners since the 1940’s with many people from that era remembering how the children often played with the box while mom did the cleaning. The box was often used for storage when a majority of the attachments inevitably came up missing.

Today’s Kirby vacuum cleaner review reads much the same as those from 40 or 50 years ago, pointing out the power with which it maintains its suction on the floor to extract all the dirt from deep down in the carpet. These reviews are not written by those who demonstrate the units in the homes, but by those who have bought them and still use them daily.

Home Air Filters - Central A/C

Central heating and air conditioning units have become extremely popular, almost to the point that people may take it for granted. 80% of new homes built in the United States are fitted with these systems.

With some simple maintenance, you can enjoy your HVAC system for many years, and can avoid costly repair costs in the future. Among the most important of these preventative steps you can do is to routinely change the air filter.

The air filter in your home’s A/C system is located at the intake points of the ventilation. There are many different types, the most common being disposable and pleated. These filters serve two main purposes. The first is to remove contaminates from the home’s air, and the second is to keep the system working smoothly.

Air Quality
As the air circulates throughout your home, the air filter will remove harmful contaminates, dust particles, pet dander, etc. from the air. In one study, air inside a home was shown to be up to 5 times more deleterious to one’s health than the air outside, when not properly filtered. This is because modern homes are built so airtight that these harmful irritants cannot escape the building.

Air filters are rated on their ability to remove these contaminants by their assigned MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). The higher the value, the better the filter is at removing dust particles and contaminants from the air.

System Performance
The second function your air filter serves is to keep you’re A/C running smoothly. A clean air filter is vital to have your air conditioner working efficiently as possible. By trapping and removing the dust particles from the airflow, it prevents these particles from schmutzing up the other elements of the A/C system.

Dirty air filters may cause problems in several areas of the system. Ice may build up on the evaporator coils if there is not sufficient airflow. This will cause decreased performance, and may damage the coils.

Clogged air filters can also cause problems with the compressor, which is very expensive to repair. Clogged airflow causes the compressor to have to work harder, causing it to fail sooner. Also, decreased airflow due to unclean filters can cause energy costs to rise as much as 20%.

Replacement
It is recommended to inspect your home’s air filter every month. If the filter is dirty, then it should be discarded and replaced immediately. Replaceable filters are available that only need to be cleaned when they get dirty. In any case, filters should not be left more than three months without replacement or cleaning.

Straight Stair Lifts

Usually, straight stair lifts will be used in those homes where the stairs do not have either a bend or curve to them. Instead these stairs will travel only along a straight track and most commonly you will find that such stair lifts are used as an external way for a person to gain access to their home from outside.

Although most straight stair lift are installed in homes in order to carry either disabled or elderly people up a straight flight of stairs, they can also be used for other purposes as well. Some people have them installed in order that they can carry heavy loads (say groceries or luggage) up stairs instead.

Often the stair lifts now available will come with a remote control system which means that the chair can then be taken to any floor so it is extremely convenient for those who require a way from getting from one area of their homes to another.

However before any stair lift whether it be straight or curved is installed in a person’s home, the stair lift manufacturer will need to carry out an assessment of the person’s home. During this assessment the manufacturer will be able to determine whether a straight or curved stair lift is the best one to be installed.

If for example your stairs are straight but once you get to the top you find that there is a projection to them then the manufacturer may decide that installing a straight stair lift is not a viable option. This is even more important if the person is looking to have a stair lift installed which will need to carry the weight of a wheelchair along with a person.

But if you are looking for a stair lift that can be installed quickly then a straight model is the best option as well as being the cheapest. The other factor that the manufacturer takes into consideration when deciding when to install straight stair lifts in to a person’s home is how much track is needed. The more track that is required then the less likely a straight stair lift will be the best option for a person to have installed.

If you are really serious about having straight stair lifts installed in your home, then you should obtain quotations from several different manufacturers before you may your final decision. Also you may look at purchasing a second hand or used stair lift rather than buying a new one which can turn out to be a very expensive investment indeed.

For example, your porch wireless home security camera calls for it to be remotely operated so it can be triggered whenever the doorbell rings. It can be incorporated into the porch light so that it does not require an infrared system.

You can swivel the camera through remote control to find out if anybody is hiding close to the door. An infrared camera close to the carport can be controlled by a motion detector so that you can discover whether anybody is creeping into the garage while the door is wide open. A wireless home security camera can be installed to store its pictures on a VCR or TiVo, broadcast its images to whichever TV set you choose at that point or transmit its images over the world wide web to a web site you can set up to observe from wherever you may be at the time. And you have the ability to alter that set up from day to day or hour to hour.

All you need that needs to be performed by you is to set up your wireless system or have it completed for you. Then determine where you should position your cameras. You could set up a camera to keep a steadfast eye on a doorway or an individual or you can erect a camera for those just-in-case occurrences so that you can activate it remotely when required.

A wireless home security camera can be as little as a lipstick case if you wish it concealed or as big as the security cameras in your local delicatessen so possible thieves will recognize that your household is defended. You could possibly set up a camera in the family room or your children's bedroom for the times the kids are at home unsupervised. They will get a sense of being more secure and you will then be able to focus on what you are expected to be carrying out when you both realize that you are watching.

Water Heaters in winter

A broken boiler or burst pipe during the winter months is every householder’s nightmare, for some replacing the aging or decrepit boiler will save you money immediately and probably more importantly you will see long-term benefits and be safe in the knowledge that you have peace of mind over the winter months. By scrutinizing your heating bills each year you will be able to ascertain just how effective your water heater has been and consider changing providers should there be a particular spike in your heating expenditure. Then of course there’s the safety issue, whenever a fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene or charcoal is burned as long as there is proper ventilation then there is no threat but if it becomes trapped in a room with due to a vent being covered it can have potentially lethal consequences when carbon monoxide is released. Stains or soot around a fire or on top of the unit itself is a clear indication that its time to get a CORGI registered engineer in. If you turn on your gas fire and watch the flame if it is an orangey yellow colour its ok, but if it’s bright yellow vacate the premises and contact your supplier.

Some people will choose to purchase breakdown cover for these eventualities but its worth bearing in mind that before you go ahead and purchase breakdown cover you should check your household insurance policy as some companies include emergency cover on home insurance policies for free. With older units it’s imperative that the check should take place at once every 12 months. It would also be prudent to purchase a carbon monoxide detector as it is undetectable to the senses.

Top Tips to save on winter utility bills

• In winter time you can save on your energy bills by turning your thermostat down this can reduce your heating bill from anywhere from 2-4%, you can achieve such savings simply by setting your thermostat at a lower level during the daytime.
• By opening your curtains in the morning you allow your house to absorb some of the heat of the sun and closing them at night seals this in.
• By wrapping an insulation blanket around your old water heater and the pipes that lead to it you can conserve heat and reduce your carbon footprint.
• Reduce hot water usage by buying a water-saving showerhead.
• When not in use turn off all appliances at the socket.
• Substitute baths for showers and replace washers on leaky taps.
• Add attic insulation
• Finally the key to saving on heating bills is to have your heating equipment checked by a qualified CORGI engineer.
Engineers will generally be more than willing to offer advise and alternatives to cut your bills down to size.
